Hearing loss and its effects do not have to be "just part of getting older." 48 million Americans suffer from hearing loss. Dr. Alexandra deGroot will help us understand what hearing loss is, and how this “invisible disability,” which affects almost two thirds of adults over 60, can severely impact quality of life if not addressed effectively. Hearing loss can lead to decreased earning potential, increased risk of depression, dementia, falls, and very often strained personal relationships around communication issues. Whether you are advocating for clients or dealing with aging parents, there are many ways to cope with hearing loss -- hearing aids are not the only option. Dr. deGroot will share tools that an advocate or health professional can use to help individuals with hearing loss stay engaged with life and thrive. She will also discuss how to find a good audiologist, buy a quality hearing aid (without getting scammed), and find local advocacy and support resources.
About the Speaker:
Alexandra holds a BA in Speech Pathology and Audiology from Loyola College in Maryland and a Doctorate in Clinical Audiology (AuD) from the University of Washington (UW). She is a fellow of the American Academy of Audiology, member of both Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Sigma Nu national honors societies, and is a recipient of the Carrel-Miner award of clinical excellence from the UW. She has practiced in Ear Nose and Throat clinics for 5 years focusing on medically complex diagnostic audiometry in addition to hearing aid and cochlear implant rehabilitation. Alongside this clinical work, she runs her own business providing continuing education to healthcare providers and training to families affected by hearing loss and tinnitus. But what all of her work boils down to is getting people with hearing loss referred more effectively for the care they need so they can reconnect with the world around them. |
